INFORMATION

LOW CONFIDENCE/ SELF-ESTEEM

Low confidence/self-esteem derives from how a person perceives and values themselves.  If a person has low-confidence/self-esteem they are likely to have a negative outlook of themselves and the world around them. The beliefs they hold about themselves can be difficult to change and as a result they can find life/situations more challenging.

Some of the difficulties they may experience could include:  isolating themselves from social events, avoiding difficult situations, new goals or challenges. A person struggling with low self esteem may not be able to recognise their strengths or show kindness towards themselves. They may feel a lack of control  in their life and their decision making . This in turn will reinforce their doubts and fears and their view about life.

There are lots of reasons for developing low self-esteem/confidence some examples may include:

  1. Being abused or bullied, physical health problems
  2. Experiencing prejudice, discrimination or stigma, including: racism or fat shaming
  3. Body image and appearance concerns
  4. Feeling overwhelmed to meet unrealistic expectations, for example through images on social media.
  5. Mental health problems, learning disabilities
  6. Relationship issues/divorce, problems at work or studying
  7. Difficulty finding employment or losing a job

Some helpful tips and suggestions to improve self-esteem:  practice self compassion, create a good support network, set a new goal/challenge, identify positives in your day, try to avoid comparing yourself to others, do something you enjoy everyday.  Think about diet as food can effect your mood. Try talking therapy.
